Chur

Hiking guide in Chur

Chur is the oldest continuously settled town in the country and the capital of Graubünden, which is really a statement about geography: it sits in a bowl at the meeting point of several valleys, and everything radiates outward from it. Brambrüesch rises directly above the town and is reached by cable car from the centre, so a session can move from street level to 1,600 metres without a car.

It is the practical base for the whole canton. Arosa, Lenzerheide, Flims and the Engadin all start here, which makes Chur the obvious place to train before a mountain week or recover after one.

Hiking

The route is chosen on the day

Switzerland has extraordinary trail signage and it still catches people out, because conditions change fast with altitude and season. Your guide picks the route after seeing the forecast and meeting you, which is the whole point of hiring one rather than following a blog post.

What to bring

Proper boots, layers, water, and something to eat. Your guide carries a first aid kit and knows what the weather is doing. If you are unsure whether your boots are adequate, they probably are not — say so when you book and your guide will tell you what to get.

Common questions

How fit do I need to be?

Say honestly what you can manage in the notes and the route is built around it. A half day at a gentle pace on a good path is achievable for most people in reasonable health.

Can we bring children?

Yes, with the route chosen accordingly. Tell us their ages — it is the single biggest factor in what is sensible.

What happens if the weather turns?

Your guide decides, and that decision is not negotiable. If the day is cancelled for safety we move it or refund it.
