Grindelwald

Grindelwald sits in a bowl at 1,034 metres with the north face of the Eiger rising 3,000 metres above it, which is not a view so much as a wall. The village is a serious mountaineering base and has been since the sport was invented, and the hiking and climbing here are correspondingly demanding.

In winter the ski area links across to Wengen and Mürren. New gondolas from the valley have cut the access time substantially, which has made half-day sessions genuinely practical from Interlaken or even Bern.
